Medicare Advantage plan changes

What happens when your Medicare Advantage plan ends or is not renewed?

You still have Medicare. The important next step is understanding your coverage choices and the deadlines that apply.

First: you do not lose Medicare.

If a Medicare Advantage plan is not renewed or ends its Medicare contract, your Medicare eligibility does not disappear. What changes is the private plan you use to receive your Medicare benefits.

Another Medicare Advantage plan

You may be able to enroll in another Medicare Advantage plan available in your service area. Before enrolling, check your doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, pharmacy network and expected costs.

Original Medicare

If you do not join another Medicare Advantage plan before your current coverage ends, you may return to Original Medicare. Prescription drug coverage should be considered separately.

Original Medicare + Medigap

If you qualify for a federal or state guaranteed-issue right, you may be able to buy certain Medicare Supplement policies without health-based denial. Timing matters.

Timing depends on why the plan is ending.

Medicare uses different Special Enrollment Period rules for different situations. For a Medicare Advantage contract that is not renewed for the following year, Medicare currently lists an enrollment opportunity from December 8 through the last day of February. Other types of contract termination can have different windows.

Keep the notice from your plan. It identifies the reason coverage is changing and the date coverage ends. Those details help determine which enrollment rights apply.

A simple checklist before choosing replacement coverage

  1. Confirm the ending date. Read the non-renewal or termination notice and keep a copy.
  2. List your doctors and hospitals. Include your PCP, specialists and preferred health systems.
  3. Review prescriptions. Check formulary status, restrictions, pharmacy network and expected costs.
  4. Compare total costs. Look beyond an advertised extra benefit and review premiums, copays and maximum out-of-pocket exposure.
  5. Check special rights. A plan exit can create additional enrollment rights, and some people who return to Original Medicare may have Medigap guaranteed-issue protections.
